Social Justice

There are many people in the world who are disadvantaged financially, physically or emotionally. People usually find themselves in these situations because of some injustice that they have suffered. This injustice could be physical disability because of injury or illness, physical or mental abuse at the hand of a parent or spouse, inherited poverty, inadequate education or a lack of opportunity. But God is a god of justice and wants to see wrongs righted. He is actively involved in our world and wants His people to join Him in helping others.

As a part of Grace Crossing Church, the Social Justice Ministry seeks to glorify God by accepting people where they are and helping them transform into authentic followers of Christ. The people God is leading us to may be pregnant and alone, elderly with a house in disrepair and no funds to help, hungry at the end of the month with no means of feeding the family or all but orphaned due to a parent's grave illness. Accepting them means meeting their needs head on with financial help, partnership with organizations who can best minister to them and sometimes hands on labor to improve their situation. By doing this, we hope to give them a testimony that sounds louder than our words and tells them that because we have been given much grace, we must give grace as well. It is our prayer that our action and story may be a part of Spirit-led transformation in their lives.

Our specific opportunities for service include partnerships with organizations in Memphis, which help specific individuals in need as well as our own efforts in Collierville to help our physical neighbors. These opportunities include:

  • Families in Transition (FIT) – a ministry branch of AGAPE helping homeless expectant moms with housing, education and friendship aimed at transforming them into mothers who have the skills to care for, teach and provide for their children while working and living on what they can earn themselves
  • Hope House – a preschool dedicated to serving HIV-impacted children and their families in Memphis
  • GraceWorks – a Grace Crossing initiative in Collierville to help disadvantaged people with home repair and maintenance
  • Downtown Community Meals – an opportunity to provide a meal to approximately 150 people on the last Wednesday of each month when monthly budgets are depleted
  • Dollar Sunday – a monthly lunch at Grace Crossing where participants pay a dollar per person for lunch and contribute what they would have normally spent for their family lunch to the Social Justice ministry.

Grace Crossing's Social Justice Ministry is primarily funded by an annual contribution taken near Thanksgiving each year and volunteer opportunities exist throughout the year. To learn more about social justice at Grace, please contact Chris Hanson at chris@gracecrossing.com.
